Flashback Friday: Bitter? Not Really!

This is just all about my very first ginisang ampalaya (sauteed bitter gourd, I hope my English is right :). Boring story! I know. I'm sorry, I cannot think of anything for my Flashback Friday.

Just want to share that this was good. Really good that it never happened again. It does not look good in the picture, but it tasted good enough for a first timer. Beginner's luck? Maybe!

So this was around 2008 pa. My husband and I used to rent a small apartment somewhere in a quiet place in the mountains of Antipolo. Since there were only just the two of us, we buy take-outs most of the time, a cheaper way than cooking. Once time I decided I should really learn to cook. I'm a wife, I should learn at least to prepare a decent meal. I cannot say I'm bad at cooking, it's just that I haven't had all the chance to teach myself. I did not learn it when I was single, being the youngest having two older sisters, what do you expect. And my mother does it well, she did not need my help!

My mother's ginisang ampalaya was the best for me. So I challenged myself to do the same. I asked an officemate how to do it and what kind of bitter gourd should I buy. I followed everything she said, and the result was more than favorable. The odds were all in my favor (sorry I just finished reading Hunger Games trilogy now) :)

The second time I did it was bad. It was bitter and so was I. I need to gain a little more self confidence to try it once again.

Happy Friday! :)

  4. Me too, i like ampalaya even if it is bitter. There are many benefits of eating ampalaya, one of which is that it can lower blood sugar. :)

  5. I haven't tried cooking ampalaya since i know i don't have the skill to make it taste less bitter. But i do eat this veggie (medyo mababa nga lang talaga tolerance ko sa pait hehe)
